“I want a high- quality box: appealing, unique, practical and efficient” that’s the request I often heard from my clients, so we begin with the first stage of the process, an in-depth discussion about all design aspects, size, color setting, general target market details, etc. then design, draft, and lastly, manufacturing.
“I want a high- quality box: appealing, unique, practical and efficient” that’s the request I often heard from my clients, so we begin with the first stage of the process, an in-depth discussion about all design aspects, size, color setting, general target market details, etc. then design, draft, and lastly, manufacturing.
Most people will think, “This is the way I want to discuss, and the finished product will be just what I imagined.” But, sometimes, the finished product doesn’t look like the original idea. Why does this happen?
- First of all at the first step is absolutely important to achieve an agreement about what is “a high-quality box”. Appealing, unique, practical, efficient all these are nouns, no a specific description, so, their meaning is the same for you than me? Your concept will be the same as my concept? Your high-quality criteria are the same as my quality certification criteria? Probably the answer is no, so don’t tell to the designer just “I want a high-quality box. That is the beginning of a nightmare… it is necessary to be descriptive as possible to achieve the expected result.
- Second, design and manufacturing are often conflicting systems. Designers know sometimes “the ideal” has an opposite relation with the real “customer needs” and the “reality” of manufacturers. The purpose is trying to achieve the ideal, but considering a) the convenient about customer needs and expectations and b) whether the manufacturer can complete these manufacturing procedures. Think about these aspects is indispensable; otherwise, the discussion at the first step will be in vain
- Finally, and one of the most critical steps is the communication with the manufacturer. Have a good relation and communication with manufacturer play an important role to get the expected final product. The design can be perfect as a result of the collaborative work between designer and client, but, is also clear for the manufacturer? What the manufacturer can achieve?
This is why one of the biggest challenges is to choose appropriate partners, because this is crucial to achieving an understanding of the product packaging needs, and consistency between the different process stages, which represents, in most cases, the failure of the expected results. All else can be managed by the professional processing !!
